Dr. Wilson’s Policy on Prescribing Narcotic Pain Medication

  • Physician prescribing of controlled substances, including narcotic pain medication, is regulated by the Kentucky state board of medical licensure in conjunction with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).  You may view these policies in detail at KMBL.ky.gov

  • All controlled substance prescriptions are tracked in a computer database (KASPER) which physicians and/or staff are required to monitor and query before prescribing a controlled substance.

  • Acute orthopedic injuries, including fractures, are limited to a short supply of narcotic pain medication of no more than 3 days.

  • Owensboro Health no longer uses paper prescriptions for Narcotic medications except in rare circumstances.  All prescriptions will be “e-scribed” unless otherwise directed.

  • Dr. Wilson will prescribe narcotic pain medication after your surgery if indicated.  Not all surgeries will necessitate a prescription for opioids.

  • Many corporate pharmacies (ie; Walmart,Walgreens,CVS,etc) have policies which restrict the quantity, strength, and frequency of refills you may obtain independent of how a physician prescribes the medication.

  • Dr. Wilson will not prescribe pain medication for any reason beyond eight weeks from the date of your surgery.  Not all surgical procedures will If you are unable to discontinue use of narcotic pain medication within this timeframe, or anticipate need for prolonged use, a referral will be made to pain management.

  • If you are under a pain management contract you will only receive one narcotic prescription from Dr. Wilson after surgery. Thereafter, all other prescriptions will need to be obtained from your pain management provider.  It is your responsibility to contact your pain management provider before surgery to inform them of your upcoming procedure.  Failure to do so may violate your pain management contract and result in termination of care.

  • If you need a refill on your pain medication and are eligible to receive a prescription based on the above noted criteria, please contact our office during regular business hours, Monday-Friday 8:00AM to 4:00PM.  Requests for pain medication after hours or on holidays will not be addressed until the following business day as staff must be present to complete KASPER queries prior to dispensing.  Please allow ample time to have your refill request approved and dispensed to your pharmacy.
